What is coaching?

The ICF (International Coaching Federation) defines coaching as “ partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.” A coach’s role is to help create positive change in their clients’ lives and to help them reach their goals. They may push and stretch you to help you reach your full potential. They will hold you accountable and challenge you to grow. Coaches do not give advice; instead they help their clients find what is best for them. Consider your coach to be your very own cheering section, devoted entirely to YOU!

How is coaching different from therapy?

The therapist’s typical functions are to help clients fix problems, overcome issues, and sometimes manage mental illness. Coaches do not work with mental illness nor spend much time on client issues or problems. In fact, coaches do not see anything as a problem only as an opportunity. Coaches focus on solutions. They do not dwell on the client’ past nor try to analyze behavior. The past is only the focus of coaching as a learning/growing tool and if part of the present situation. Coaches neither start in the past, nor stay there, but release the energy the past has on clients so they can move forward.

Why work with a life coach?

There are many reasons to work with a life coach. For instance, you might consider looking for one if you:

  • Not knowing how to move forward in your life
  • Don’t know what to do about a major life decision
  • You need clarity about the direction of your life.
  • Don’t have an acceptable work-life balance

What do you mean by ‘wellness coach’ ?

Wellness coaches help clients to reach optimal well-being, whatever that looks like for you. This includes physical health such as exercise, nutrition, weight, sleep and physical energy as well as mental health such as stress coping, life meaning and purpose, positive mind-set, nourishing relationships, goal setting and attainment.

Is it worth it to work with a coach?

It’s never been more important to invest in the only asset you can’t live without: your health. It’s important to stand back and ask yourself, how much is my optimal health worth to me? You need to be healthy, both mentally and physically, in order to live the best life that you can live. Investing in one’s health and wellness can be one of the best returns on investment.
